UCH Joins Global Community to Mark 2026 World Patient Safety Day

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, on Thursday, 17th September, 2026, joined the global community to commemorate World Patient Safety Day with the theme Safe Care for Non-Communicable Diseases.

In her welcome address, the Head of the Department of Clinical Nursing, Mrs. Rebecca Ishabiyi, welcomed the management team and staff to this year's celebration. She said the 2026 focus is on people living with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer, and urged healthcare workers to remain committed to practices that ensure patients get better.

In her remarks, the Head of the Department of Public Health Nursing, Mrs. Olumide Adewuyi, said the commemoration raises awareness of safety risks across the NCD care journey. She advised members of the public to maintain a balanced diet, sustain healthy relationships, engage in regular exercise, prioritize good mental health and maintain healthy sleep patterns.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, congratulated nurses and other healthcare workers on the occasion. He said it is the mandate of the present administration to ensure that patients receive safe, quality and people-centred care through continuous improvement, teamwork, vigilance and strict adherence to patient safety standards across all service points.

Prof. Otegbayo commended the Nursing Services Department for sustaining awareness on patient safety and reiterated management's commitment to strengthening systems that promote safe care, prevent avoidable harm and improve health outcomes for all patients, particularly those living with non-communicable diseases.

He urged all staff to remain committed to safe practices, effective communication, accurate documentation and empathy in the dischduties their duties.
