The Management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has issued an urgent but important notice on the Congress Election to fill one vacant position.

As part of resolutions reached at the recent Congregation Meeting of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) held on Friday, September 19, 2025, and in line with Article 4, Fourth Schedule of the University of Lagos Act, 1967 (as amended), the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Congregation has approved the conduct of an election to fill one (1) vacant Congregation Representative seat on the Budget Monitoring Committee of Council. The election will be conducted via e-voting as follows:

Membership and Eligibility

Members of the University community are reminded of the Senate Resolutions guiding Congregation membership:

  • Resolution of May 24, 1967: All graduate members of the Library, the Administrative and Technical Staff, and other posts approved by Senate shall be deemed members of Congregation.
  • Resolution of June 29, 2016: Only a first degree (university degree) qualifies a person for membership of Congregation. A Higher National Diploma (HND), even when combined with a Master’s degree, does not confer eligibility.

The forthcoming election is to complete the tenure of a member whose seat is vacant.

Procedure for the Election

  • Members of Congregation are to confirm their eligibility on the Congregation register (via the University website: www.unilag.edu.ng) between Monday, October 6 and Wednesday, October 8, 2025, using their UNILAG email address.
  • Complaints on eligibility are to be directed to the Deputy Registrar, HRMD, between Tuesday, October 7 and Thursday, October 9, 2025.
  • Resolved eligibility cases will be forwarded to CITS by HRMD through the Senate and Ceremonies Unit by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025.
  • Interested candidates should obtain nomination forms (downloadable online or obtainable from faculties/departments/units). A passport photograph of the nominee must be attached (glued or taped, not pinned).
  • Completed nomination forms must be submitted to the Senate & Ceremonies Unit no later than 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025.
  • The list of duly nominated candidates will be published on the University website by 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025.
  • The Congregation meeting will hold virtually at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, with accreditation and voting conducted electronically.

E-Voting Guidelines

  • Members must have access to their UNILAG email addresses.
  • Access to the virtual meeting platform opens at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. Members are advised to join promptly to ensure quorum before the meeting begins.
  • Links and passcodes for the virtual meeting will be sent to members’ UNILAG email addresses by Monday, October 13, 2025.
  • Eligible voters will receive voting access codes by 8:00 a.m. on election day. Voting will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
  • Each eligible voter is entitled to one vote only.
  • Candidates for election must designate representatives to monitor proceedings from the “Control Room” at ABS-CITS during voting. Written submissions of nominees must be made to the Senate and Ceremonies Unit by 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025.
  • Complaints during the e-voting exercise should be forwarded to: citshelpdesk@unilag.edu.ng
  • Results will be announced and displayed on the University website at the conclusion of the voting exercise.

Members of Congregation without a valid UNILAG email address/password will not be able to vote. All members are therefore urged to ensure access to their official email accounts.
