UNIPORT VC Says Green Energy And Environmental Education Key To Sustainable Future

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Chike Princewill, has reaffirmed the University's commitment to environmental sustainability, emphasizing that green energy and environmental education are indispensable to achieving a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable society.

Professor Princewill stated this on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, when he received the organisers of the Environmental Education Summit in the Vice-Chancellor's Committee Room, University Park, Choba.

The Vice-Chancellor described environmental education as a critical tool for promoting responsible environmental practices and changing attitudes towards the environment. He stressed that educating citizens on environmental preservation is fundamental to addressing climate change and other environmental challenges.

He further called on the organisers to ensure that the summit produces practical resolutions and implementable decisions that will positively impact society and contribute meaningfully to national environmental sustainability. According to him, embracing green energy and strengthening environmental education are essential steps towards securing a sustainable future for generations yet unborn.

Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Nath Abraham, who led the delegation, briefed the Vice-Chancellor on the objectives of the Environmental Education Summit. He explained that the summit is aimed at bringing together stakeholders to brainstorm on practical strategies for making the environment cleaner and greener while educating Nigerians on the need to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

Professor Abraham commended the Vice-Chancellor for his proactive leadership and commitment to restoring the University's physical environment. He noted that within a few days of assuming office, Professor Princewill had cleared areas around the University's entrance that had hitherto been taken over by hoodlums and roadside traders, thereby improving the free movement of motorists and pedestrians.

He further applauded the Vice-Chancellor for restoring the University's surroundings to the serenity, orderliness and aesthetic appeal befitting a world-class academic institution, describing the development as a demonstration of purposeful leadership and a renewed commitment to excellence.
