Professor Olapegba emerged as the preferred candidate following a transparent and competitive selection process conducted by the university’s Governing Council and Joint Council-Senate Selection Board.
The appointment was approved during the Council’s meeting on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, after it considered and endorsed the recommendation of the Selection Board. The position of Vice-Chancellor will become vacant on November 1, 2026, following the expiration of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor.
The process for appointing a new Vice-Chancellor commenced in April 2026, with advertisements published in three national newspapers and the university’s official bulletin in line with established procedures. At the close of the application period, six candidates had applied for the position.
Subsequently, a Search Team was constituted in accordance with the provisions of the University Act to identify qualified candidates who may not have applied voluntarily. The exercise resulted in two additional applications, bringing the total number of candidates to eight.

On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the Governing Council conducted an assessment session with all eight candidates. The candidates were evaluated based on approved guidelines, after which five candidates were shortlisted according to merit for the final stage of the selection process.
As required by law, two members of the Governing Council were appointed to the Selection Board, while the Senate also elected two representatives to serve on the Board. The Joint Council-Senate Selection Board subsequently interviewed the shortlisted candidates on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.
Following the final assessment, Professor Olapegba was ranked the best candidate and was recommended for appointment as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.

Professor Olapegba, who currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the university, will assume leadership of the institution as its 14th Vice-Chancellor upon the commencement of his tenure.
