UNIZIK Hosts Gen. TY Danjuma and Chief Emeka Anyaoku for Historic Institute Tour

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) community witnessed a historic convergence of statesmanship on thursday 19th march 2026, as the Pro-Chancellor, Barrister Monsur Olugbenga Kukoyi and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, played host to the former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Yakubu (TY) Danjuma, GCON and Former Commonwealth Secretary General Chief Emeka Anyaoku GCON .

The visit was a celebratory tour of the Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies and Diplomacy

General Danjuma expressed profound satisfaction with the quality and pace of the work. He lauded the university management for the speedy delivery of the construction, which was completed within a remarkable one-year timeframe.

The General noted that the project's rapid realization is a rare example of transparency and dedication in institutional development, proving that with the right leadership, world-class infrastructure is achievable in record time.

The event took an emotional and lighthearted turn when General Danjuma spoke of his long-standing bond with the man the centre is named after the legendary diplomat, Chief Emeka Anyaoku GCON.

In a revelation that captivated the audience, TY Danjuma shared that Chief Anyaoku was actually his teacher during his formative years at the military school. He described Chief Anyaoku as "one of the most brilliant" minds he encountered during his training.

The General further delighted guests by teasing his former mentor, jokingly remarking that despite the years, Chief Anyaoku still looks "very healthy and much younger" than himself a comment that drew warm laughter and a standing ovation from the university dons.

Responding, Chief Anyaoku officially disclosed that General Danjuma remains the centre's highest benefactor, having donated over one billion naira to ensure the project’s successful completion and furnishing.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Bond Ugochukwu Stanley Anyaehie, thanked Chief Anyaoku for his selfless decision to immortalize his name within the university. He credited Anyaoku’s global reputation for facilitating the immediate and successful fundraising efforts that brought the International Study Centre to fruition.

Prof. Anyaehie emphasized that the partnership between these two icons serves as a powerful inspiration to the students and UNIZIK community.

The climax of the visit featured symbolic tree planting and cultural presentation led by the Director of the Centre, Prof. AU Nonyelu. 

In a show of "Igbo hospitality" and deep appreciation for TY Danjuma’s immense philanthropic gestures, the General was presented with prestigious Igbo paraphernalia which includes; an expertly sewn Isiagu outfit (the traditional "Lion Head" attire), the Akupe Igbo (traditional hand fan), Okpu Ndi-Igbo (the symbolic red cap), Traditional Igbo bangles and anklets etc

Prof. Nonyelu praised the General not just as a donor, but as a "bosom friend and loyal student" of Chief Anyaoku, noting that his contribution has secured a future for diplomatic studies in Nigeria.

The Chief Emeka Anyaoku International Study Centre is now poised to become a hub for global research, standing as a permanent monument to the friendship between a military giant and a diplomatic titan.
