Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Commemorates 6th Anniversary of Gubi Bridge Tragedy
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) has announced plans to observe a minute of silence in memory of six students who lost their lives in the Gubi bridge collapse six years ago. The tragic incident, which occurred after a heavy rainfall, left the university community in deep mourning and remains one of the darkest moments in ATBU’s history.
As part of the 2025 SUG Week, the SUG President, Citizen Fahad Abdullahi, declared that a minute of silence will be observed before the start of every SUG activity throughout the week. This act of remembrance is meant to honor the lives of the six students and reinforce the university’s commitment to preserving their legacy.
“The commemoration is both a tribute to our fallen colleagues and a solemn reminder of the importance of student safety,” said President Abdullahi.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Nigerian Army Engineers constructed a stronger and more durable bridge at the site, dedicated to the memory of the students who perished. The new structure now stands as a symbol of resilience and a testament to the university’s efforts toward preventing such incidents in the future.
The SUG’s decision to include this tribute in its annual week activities underscores the enduring impact of the loss and the importance of collective remembrance within the ATBU community.
