ACU Concludes Drivers Training With Focus on Safety Ethics and Professionalism

Ajayi Crowther University ACU Oyo has concluded the second and final day of its maiden comprehensive workshop for drivers with security agencies and traffic management authorities providing practical training on road safety professional ethics and drug abuse prevention.

The two day workshop titled Enhancing Road Safety Ethical Policing and Professional Driving Skills brought together representatives of the Nigeria Police Force National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority OYRTMA and university officials to strengthen the capacity of the institution's drivers.

Speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force Chief Superintendent of Police Ignatius Inyang emphasized the importance of defensive driving and responsible conduct. He described defensive driving as a proactive approach aimed at preventing accidents before they occur.

He advised drivers to remain alert at all times pay attention to unusual sounds from their vehicles that could indicate mechanical faults and always show consideration for other road users.

The University Bursar Dr. Ayodele Olusanwo urged drivers to maintain confidentiality discretion and honesty in the discharge of their duties noting that they often have access to sensitive information.

Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration Professor Olukayode Binuyo introduced a framework using the acronym DRIVERS to reinforce the values of Discipline Responsibility Integrity Vigilance Excellence Respect and Safety. He said applying these principles would improve road safety and professionalism across the university.

Deputy Area Commander of the NDLEA Oyo Area Command Assistant Commander of Narcotics Duro Aiyenugba warned participants against drug abuse and alcohol consumption while driving stressing that both impair judgment and increase the risk of road accidents.

He also encouraged drivers to remain content with legitimate sources of income and avoid involvement in illegal activities.

Representing the NSCDC Area Commander Superintendent Oladele Aremu said every driver should demonstrate Concentration Control Consciousness Courtesy and Common Sense to ensure safe driving.

Commander Eyitayo Olonade of the OYRTMA Oyo Zonal Command advised participants to obey traffic signs observe lane discipline comply with speed limits and maintain a neat appearance that reflects professionalism.

Director of Works and Services Engineer Oluwole Olaniyi concluded the training with a session on professional ethics accountability and emotional intelligence. He also encouraged drivers to use digital navigation tools such as Google Maps to improve efficiency and reduce travel time.

The workshop featured a practical assessment based on real life driving scenarios conducted under the supervision of Vice Chancellor Professor Ebunoluwa Oduwole. Certificates of participation were presented to all drivers at the end of the programme.
