The Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, at its 45th Regular Meeting held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, approved the promotion of 607 staff of the institution, alongside several conversions, upgrades, and proper placements across various staff categories.
The Council also approved the confirmation of appointment of 93 staff, following the recommendations of the Appointments and Promotions Committee (A&APC) chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Elom, for the 2024/2025 staff appraisal year.
A breakdown of the approved promotions shows that 74 academic staff were elevated — comprising 62 promoted to Lecturer I and 12 to Lecturer II. In addition, 409 senior non-teaching staff and 124 junior non-teaching staff benefited from the exercise.
Council further approved the upgrade of 101 junior staff, the proper placement of 81, and the conversion of 2 junior staff, as well as a change in designation for 5 others. Among senior non-teaching staff, 40 were approved for change in designation, 33 for change in designation/proper placement, 75 for change in designation/upgrade, and 10 for conversion.
Since assuming office, Professor Sunday Elom has maintained a consistent commitment to staff welfare, ensuring that qualified personnel who meet the requisite criteria are duly considered for promotion and related career advancements. This year’s approval is particularly notable, as many junior staff members who had acquired additional qualifications had long awaited proper placement and recognition.
Their long-standing appeals were finally addressed under the current Vice-Chancellor’s leadership, a development that sparked widespread jubilation within the university community and drew commendations from staff unions.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), AE-FUNAI branch, Comrade Chibuike Igwe, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for his “fatherly decision” in ensuring that the workers’ demands, which had lingered for years, were fulfilled during his tenure. He described the upgrade as one of Professor Elom’s most significant achievements due to its direct impact on staff welfare and career progression.
Comrade Igwe also appreciated the Governing Council, chaired by Engr. Dr. Anthony Nebo, for heeding the call of reason by approving the management’s recommendations. He urged members of the union to reciprocate the goodwill by remaining committed to their duties and contributing to the continued growth and development of the university.
