Bauchi Police Launch Manhunt After Brutal Attack on Sa’adu Zungur University Student

The Bauchi State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for an unidentified assailant following a violent assault on a 22-year-old student of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZUG), Gadau.

The victim, identified as Maryam Yakini, was attacked on the evening of April 23, 2026, near Villa Lodge, an off-campus residential area. The assailant, armed with a machete and a knife, inflicted severe injuries on the student—including the severing of her left thumb and ear—before robbing her of her school ID and ATM cards.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed that Yakini is currently receiving intensive care at the Teaching Hospital, Azare, and is responding to treatment.

Crucially, the Command has debunked viral social media reports claiming the student had passed away. The police described these rumors as a "desperate attempt to incite unrest" and urged the public to disregard the misinformation.
