"Enough is enough" - ASUU warns FG it will ground varsities with strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has warned that it will join a nationwide indefinite strike if the Federal Government fails to address its long-standing demands.
The union's chairman, Oyibo Eze, made this declaration after a congress and protest rally in Nsukka, citing the government's neglect of education and refusal to implement agreements reached with the union since 2009.
A nationwide strike by ASUU would likely disrupt academic activities in public universities, exacerbating the challenges already faced by students. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has warned that it will shut down critical infrastructure nationwide if the strike proceeds.
The Federal Government is expected to meet with ASUU on September 2 to discuss the union's demands. The outcome of this meeting will determine the next course of action for the union. The UNN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, has appealed to ASUU to consider strike only as a last resort.
