Former UNILORIN VC, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, Passes Away After Brief Illness

Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, has died at the age of 68 after a brief illness. He was also serving as Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of Kwara State University at the time of his death. The University of Ilorin described his passing as a great loss to the academic community and the nation, while announcing funeral arrangements for his Janazah prayer in Ilorin.

Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, University of Ilorin, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has passed away at the age of 68 after a brief illness.

His death was announced by the Vice-Chancellor of UNILORIN, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, through a statement issued by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun.

According to the statement, Prof. Ambali, who served as the Vice-Chancellor of UNILORIN between 2012 and 2017, died earlier on Saturday morning. Until his passing, he was also serving as the Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of Kwara State University, Malete.

Describing his death as a huge loss, the Vice-Chancellor noted that Prof. Ambali’s contributions extended beyond the University of Ilorin and Kwara State University, impacting the academic community and the nation at large

“The death of Prof. Ambali is a huge loss not only to the University of Ilorin and Kwara State University, Malete, which he currently serves as Pro-Chancellor but also to the entire nation and humanity,” the statement read.

Prof. Egbewole also extended condolences to the family of the late scholar and the Ilorin Emirate community, urging members of the UNILORIN community and sympathisers to attend the Janazah prayer scheduled to hold at his residence in Oloje Housing Estate, Ilorin, at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali was widely respected as an erudite scholar and professor of veterinary medicine, remembered for his academic leadership and service to higher education in Nigeria.
