From Scholar to Leader - Profile of Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibrahim Mohammed Sule

Prof. Ibrahim Mohammed Sule is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and currently the Vice Chancellor of Mercy Medical University, Iwara, Iwo, Osun State.

Born on September 23, 1966, in Kontagora, headquarters of Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State, Prof. Sule obtained his First School Leaving Certificate from Rimaye Primary School, Kontagora in 1979, and his West Africa School Certificate from Government Science College, Kagara in 1984.

He obtained his Interim Joint Matriculation Board, IJMB, certificate from the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1985, B. Pharm from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, ABU Zaria in 1989, and http://M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1999 and 2003 respectively from the same university.

Prof. Sule began his career as an Intern Pharmacist with the Niger State Ministry of Health in 1989 and rose to the rank of Senior Pharmacist.

He joined the service of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in February 1997 as Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 2011.

He has held several academic and administrative positions including Head, Pharmacy Department, General Hospital Kagara, 1992 to 1993, Quality Control Manager, Niger State Infusion Plant, Minna, 1993 to 1994, Head, Pharmacy Department, General Hospital Tungan Magajiya, 1993 to 1997, Head, Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, ABU Zaria, 2006 to 2010, Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, ABU Zaria, 2007 to 2011, Deputy Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring, ABU Zaria, December 2012 to December 2013, Acting Director of the same Directorate, December 2013 to February 2014, and Director, February 2014 to February 2018.

He proceeded on a one-year sabbatical at Gombe State University from June 2018 to May 2019, where he served as Head, Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry and Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

On return, he was appointed Director, Distance Learning Centre, ABU Zaria from May 2020 to July 2024, before his appointment as Vice Chancellor, Mercy Medical University, Iwara, Iwo, Osun State, effective July 1, 2025.

Prof. Sule is a member of several professional bodies including the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, the Nigeria Association of Pharmacists in Academia, NAPA, and was a member of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, PCN.

In his academic career, he has supervised many undergraduate projects, 41 http://M.Sc. theses and 22 Ph.D. dissertations as major and minor supervisor, and has over 70 publications in local and international journals.
