The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has bid farewell to one of its stalwarts, Mr. George Oyegunse, affectionately known as Baba "International," following his retirement from the institution after years of exemplary service. Oyegunse, who joined FUTA on 12th May 2008 as Principal Executive Officer, officially retired on 3rd November 2025.
With the establishment of the International Strategy Office (ISO) on 13th October 2014, in line with the National Universities Commission’s directive for all Nigerian universities to develop international offices, Mr. Oyegunse’s role expanded to oversee the university’s global partnerships and international engagements.
Delivering his valedictory lecture, titled "Service beyond Self: Reflections on my journey through the public service," Oyegunse reflected on his career: “Service is not measured by position or power, but by impact and integrity. Integrity is non-negotiable… Humility and respect for colleagues foster teamwork and harmony. Mentorship is a duty; the knowledge we accumulate over the years must not end with us.”
Professor Bamidele Akinyele, Director of ISO, represented by ISO Associate Director, Professor Adegbenro Badejo, lauded Oyegunse for his outstanding contributions, saying, “Your work in our international office has bridged cultures and borders, fostering meaningful connections and driving impactful projects worldwide. Your legacy will continue to inspire a new generation of international professionals.”
Goodwill messages were also received from former ISO Director Professor Afolabi Akindahunsi, Professor Boniface Alese, Dean, School of Computing, former Dean of School of Science Professor Kolade Koriko, Director, Center for Gender Issues in Science and Technology (CEGIST), and other colleagues and staff, celebrating Oyegunse’s career, dedication, and lasting impact on FUTA’s international collaborations.
