IGP Approves Mobile Police Detachment for FUHSO Permanent Site in Otukpo

Candidates seeking admission into the Federal University of Health Sciences (FUHSO), Otukpo, Benue State, who are apprehensive about insecurity in and around the institution, can now heave a sigh of relief as the university prepares to relocate to its permanent site at Akwete.

Already, a Mobile Police detachment comprising more than 60 armed personnel has been approved for the area by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to curtail any form of security threat.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Francis Aba Uba, disclosed this at his Otada temporary office during an interaction with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, led by its Chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber.

Professor Uba commended the Benue State Government for its quick response in protecting students of the institution during the recent attacks by armed bandits at Otukpo-Nobi, which is one kilometre from the university.

While acknowledging the support of the state government, Professor Uba appealed for the completion of the Otobi Dam to address the water challenge confronting the institution.

According to him, the water challenge has made the university depend solely on water tankers, thereby gulping enormous funds that could have been deployed to other critical areas.

The Vice-Chancellor described the relationship between the university and its immediate community as “robust”, explaining that upon assumption of office in May 2025, he led the management to meet with community leaders and the traditional ruler to solicit their cooperation.

Earlier, the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, said the visit was in line with the constitutional responsibilities of the media to promote accountability.

He stressed that the union was prepared to partner with institutions for good governance.
