NITDA, iDICE Set to Establish Technical/Robotic Centre of Excellence at UNIPORT

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) Programme, is set to establish a Technical/Robotic Centre of Excellence at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).

The development follows a visit by a delegation from NITDA and iDICE to the university on Monday, September 21, 2026, as part of efforts towards the establishment of the Centre.

The delegation, led by the Senior Manager, NITDA Abuja Office, Engr. Aminayanasam Omorieokuma, inspected relevant facilities and engaged the university on its preparedness to host the Centre.

The delegation was received on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill, by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Advancement, Prof. Chukwudi Onyeaso.

Speaking during the visit, Engr. Omorieokuma said the proposed Centre was intended to strengthen technological capacity, innovation and practical skills development, particularly in emerging areas of technology.

The initiative is expected to provide a platform for students, researchers and other beneficiaries to develop practical competencies in areas including robotics and other emerging technologies.

NITDA's existing technology initiatives include research and development in artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, Internet of Things, digital manufacturing and other emerging technologies.

The iDICE Programme, which stands for Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises, is a Federal Government-backed programme designed to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, job creation and economic transformation through the growth of Nigeria's digital technology and creative ecosystems.

Responding, the representative of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chukwudi Onyeaso, expressed the university's appreciation to NITDA and the iDICE Programme for considering UNIPORT for the initiative.

He said the proposed Centre aligns with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor, particularly his emphasis on digitalisation, innovation, collaboration and the development of relevant skills to prepare students for the demands of a rapidly changing technological environment.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor assured the delegation of the university's full cooperation and support towards the realisation of the project.

He expressed optimism that the Centre would significantly expand opportunities for practical learning, research, innovation and technology-driven skills development within the university.

Prof. Onyeaso also expressed appreciation to Prof. Bourdillon Omijeh for facilitating the initiative.
