RSU Honours University Librarian, Dr Juliet Alex-Nmecha, with Unveiling of Three Books

Rivers State University has honoured its University Librarian, Dr. Juliet C. Alex-Nmecha, with the unveiling of three books authored in recognition of her contributions to scholarship, librarianship, mentorship and professional development.

The books unveiled are: Advocacy and Sustainable Future in Library and Information Management; Mentorship: A Catalyst for Professional Growth in Librarianship; and Echos: the Power of Advocacy in Librarianship.

The unveiling was done during a special birthday and Festschrift celebration held in her honour on Tuesday, 25th August, 2026.

Speaking at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, described Dr. Alex-Nmecha as an accomplished academic, librarian, mentor, wife, mother and team player whose passion for knowledge and people had made a lasting impression on those around her.

Professor Zeb-Obipi said her commitment to documenting and publishing her ideas and experiences had contributed to making valuable knowledge accessible to others. He particularly highlighted her contribution to the concept of “organisational parenting,” which promotes deliberate mentoring and development of individuals to foster positive professional and behavioural attributes, accelerated growth and improved organisational performance.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Alex-Nmecha had demonstrated this philosophy through her mentorship of librarians and other professionals, as well as her willingness to help others advance in their careers.

He also described her as a change-oriented personality, noting her passion for improving systems and processes whenever they fall below expected standards. He added that her scholarly works and professional activities reflected her desire to promote positive change within the library profession and the University.

Professor Zeb-Obipi commended her humility despite her wealth of knowledge and professional accomplishments, saying her ability to make meaningful contributions without losing her humility had earned her the respect and affection of colleagues and associates.

He expressed delight that a Festschrift had been produced in her honour while she was still actively serving, describing it as a testament to the impact she had made in the lives of others.

The Vice-Chancellor also acknowledged Dr. Alex-Nmecha’s commitment to the Library Association of Nigeria and her leadership contributions to the professional body. He said the books being unveiled were not only a celebration of her achievements but also an advocacy for the continued growth and development of librarianship.

In his remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Blessing Jaja, described the celebrant as an accomplished scholar, mentor, home builder, role model and beacon of light to many women.

Professor Jaja said the occasion provided an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate Dr. Alex-Nmecha’s years of scholarship and service. He commended her contributions to the University Library, particularly her efforts towards creating a convenient and welcoming environment where students and staff could access knowledge and academic resources.

He prayed for the celebrant’s long life and continued fulfilment, expressing confidence that her contributions to the University and the library profession would continue to yield positive results.

Responding, Dr. Juliet C. Alex-Nmecha expressed gratitude for the large turnout of principal officers, staff, colleagues, friends and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate with her.

She described the occasion as memorable and humbling, appreciating the University Management, colleagues, friends and family for the honour and support.

The celebrant noted that the celebration and unveiling of the books represented more than a recognition of her personal achievements, but also reflected the collective contributions of the people who had supported and encouraged her throughout her academic and professional journey.

She expressed particular appreciation to her family for their sacrifices, love and support, as well as to colleagues in the library profession and the Library Association of Nigeria for their collaboration over the years.

Dr. Alex-Nmecha reaffirmed her commitment to advancing librarianship, scholarship and mentorship, pledging to continue contributing to the growth of the University and the development of younger professionals.

The event culminated in the ceremonial unveiling of the three books by the Vice-Chancellor, the celebrant and her husband, joined by other principal officers and professional colleagues.
