The Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria, Borno State Organizing Committee, paid a courtesy and awareness visit to the Vice-Chancellor University of Maiduguri on Tuesday, 19th May 2026, at the Senate Annex Building.
The visit was aimed at creating awareness about World Family Doctors Day, an annual global event celebrated to promote the importance of family medicine and compassionate healthcare services across the world.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yakubu Mohammed warmly received the delegation and commended the theme for this year’s celebration, “Compassionate Care in the Digital World.” He noted that compassion remains one of the most important qualities in the medical profession, stressing that patients feel more comfortable and confident when attended to by compassionate doctors.

Professor Yakubu further described the proposal presented by the team as a welcome development, assuring them that the university management would carefully consider their suggestions. He added that introducing such healthcare-related facilities and programs into the institution would contribute greatly to the advancement of the university and could eventually be incorporated into the university’s academic curriculum.
Speaking during the visit, the Team Lead for World Family Doctors Day, Dr. Adam Gambo Musa, who also serves as Chairman of the Organizing Committee, emphasized the importance of integrating family medicine into the curriculum of all universities offering Medicine and Surgery programs.
He explained that establishing family medicine facilities within institutions would strengthen the primary healthcare system and reduce the burden on teaching hospitals, thereby allowing tertiary hospitals to focus more on critical and specialized medical conditions.
The event concluded with the presentation of a gift of appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor’s representative by the organizing committee, while the team expressed gratitude to the university management for accepting and supporting their proposal."
