SUMAS Secures NUC Approval for Six New Undergraduate Programmes, Set to Begin in 2026/2027 Session

The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to establish six new undergraduate academic programmes from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval followed a resource verification exercise conducted by a panel of experts constituted by the NUC to assess the human and material resources available for the proposed programmes.
The exercise was designed to determine the university’s readiness and capacity to commence and sustain the programmes in accordance with the standards and requirements of the regulatory body.
Following the successful resource assessment, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission approved the establishment of the six programmes in full-time mode at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, with effect from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The newly approved programmes are:
- O.D. Optometry
- B.DS. Dentistry
- B.Sc. Dental Therapy
- B.Sc. Dental Technology
- B.Sc. Pharmacology
- B.Sc. Prosthetics and Orthotics
The approval marks another development in the growth and expansion of SUMAS as a specialised university committed to producing highly skilled professionals in medicine, health sciences, natural and applied sciences, engineering and other related disciplines.
The university said the approval further demonstrates its commitment to providing quality academic programmes supported by qualified academic personnel, appropriate infrastructure, modern laboratories, specialised equipment and other essential learning resources required for effective teaching, research and professional training.
The university management expressed appreciation to the National Universities Commission for its confidence in the institution and acknowledged the contributions of the University’s Governing Council, Management, staff and other stakeholders towards the successful resource verification exercise.
The approval is also expected to expand the academic opportunities available to prospective students seeking professional training in specialised areas of health and medical sciences.
