President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), as the new Chairman of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The appointment places Prof. Ogundipe at the helm of Nigeria’s apex regulatory body for university education. As NUC Chairman, he will be responsible for policy direction, quality assurance, and overall oversight of Nigeria’s university system to ensure standards, accreditation, and sustainable development across federal, state, and private institutions.
Prof. Ogundipe served as UNILAG’s 12th substantive Vice-Chancellor from 2017 to 2022. During his tenure he was widely recognized for driving infrastructural expansion, research innovation, digital transformation, and improved global ranking for the university. His academic background is in Botany, with decades of experience in teaching, research, and university administration.
The appointment comes at a time when Nigerian universities face challenges around funding, curriculum modernization, TETFund utilization, and alignment with global employability standards. Stakeholders expect Prof. Ogundipe’s wealth of experience in managing a top-tier university to strengthen NUC’s regulatory role and deepen reforms in the sector.

The university community and education stakeholders have congratulated the new NUC Chairman, expressing optimism that his leadership will promote excellence, accountability, and innovation in Nigeria’s higher education system.
