UK Increases Student Visa Proof of Funds for Nigerians in 2026
Nigerians planning to study in the United Kingdom will face higher proof-of-funds requirements from November 30, 2026, following changes to the UK Student visa financial rules.
Nigerian students applying for UK Student Visas from November 30, 2026, must show higher proof of funds, with new monthly living costs of £1,570 in London and £1,203 outside London.
The new requirement will affect students submitting visa applications on or after the effective date, including Nigerians preparing for the January 2027 academic intake.
The adjustment was announced in the UK Home Office’s Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules, HC 584, presented to Parliament on September 3, 2026.
The revised policy affects the maintenance requirement, which requires international students to demonstrate that they have enough money to cover their living expenses while studying in the UK.
Students in London will be required to show £1,570 per month, while those studying outside London must provide evidence of £1,203 per month. Applicants are required to demonstrate funds for up to nine months, depending on the length of their course.
The Home Office said the review was conducted to align the financial requirement with the maintenance loans available to UK students for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The increase does not affect tuition fees, visa application charges or the Immigration Health Surcharge, which remain separate costs that applicants must budget for.

Under the existing financial rules, students must keep the required funds in an acceptable bank account for at least 28 consecutive days before applying. The final day of the 28-day period must fall within 31 days of the visa application.
Applicants using funds held by their parents or legal guardians must also provide evidence of their relationship and written consent for the money to be used.
However, students who have paid eligible accommodation deposits directly to their universities may deduct the qualifying amount from the living-cost funds they are required to demonstrate, subject to the applicable limit.
The new requirement means Nigerian students planning to submit applications from November 30 will need to review their financial arrangements to ensure they meet the revised threshold.
Those who submit their applications before the implementation date will be assessed under the previous requirements.
The UK remains a major destination for Nigerian students pursuing international qualifications, but the latest adjustment adds to the financial considerations facing families planning overseas education.
