Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, disclosed the figure during the matriculation ceremony held on Thursday in Benin. The VC highlighted that the cohort includes pioneers of approximately 20 newly-introduced courses and programmes, emphasizing the university’s commitment to expanding academic offerings in response to evolving educational needs.
“You have been admitted strictly on merit. Therefore, merit and excellence should be your watch words in your academic sojourn here at the University of Benin,” Prof. Omoregie stated, urging students to uphold high standards throughout their time on campus.
Describing UNIBEN as a first-generation university and a leading institution in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Vice-Chancellor reiterated that the university has, over the past 55 years, maintained a reputation for quality teaching, impactful research, and meaningful community engagement.
Prof. Omoregie also cautioned students against engaging in cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, and other social vices, stressing that the university maintains a zero-tolerance policy on such infractions.
The historic matriculation underscores UNIBEN’s ongoing dedication to nurturing graduates who are not only academically proficient but also socially responsible and capable of contributing positively to national development.
