Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Joseph Ajienka, has called for strategic reforms aimed at improving the global visibility and competitiveness of Nigerian universities.

Prof. Ajienka made the call while speaking on the topic “Positioning Universities for Global Visibility” during the first day of the Governing Council Retreat held at Lakowe Golf Resort, Lagos.

In his presentation, he identified innovation, research excellence, digital transformation, and international collaboration as key factors required for universities to remain globally competitive.

According to him, Nigerian universities must intentionally align with international best practices, strengthen research output, and build strategic partnerships capable of improving institutional rankings and global relevance.

He further stressed that universities can no longer rely solely on traditional academic structures if they hope to compete effectively in an increasingly globalized education sector.
