UNIZIK Expands Digital Postgraduate Education, Opens Remote Learning and Defence Options

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has expanded its postgraduate education system to accommodate students who may be unable to participate physically in academic activities on campus.

The development, under the administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, allows postgraduate students to choose between the traditional physical mode of study and an online option designed to improve access for students living outside Awka, other parts of Nigeria and abroad.

Through the College of Postgraduate Studies, led by Prof. Emmanuel Chukwudebere Obidimma, eligible students can participate remotely in lectures, access academic resources and undertake other approved academic activities.

The arrangement also provides for eligible postgraduate students to take part in examinations and, subject to approved University procedures, defend their projects, theses and dissertations remotely.

The initiative means students residing in cities such as Lagos and Abuja, as well as those living in countries including the United Kingdom and the United States, can complete important aspects of their postgraduate programmes without having to travel to Awka for every academic activity.

Beyond lectures and examinations, the digital system also supports proposal development, research supervision, research presentations, corrections and final defence, providing an additional avenue for students who are not physically close to the University.

The initiative is part of the broader digital transformation taking place across UNIZIK through its Management Information and Communication Technology Unit (MICTU), headed by Prof. Ikechukwu Onyenwe.

The University’s digitisation efforts have extended to several student and academic services, including:

  • Transcript processing
  • Tuition payment
  • Certificate collection
  • The UNIZIK Student Portal
  • Artificial Intelligence-enabled biometric capturing
  • Proctored examinations
  • Digital clearance for graduating students

According to the development, the digital initiatives are aimed at reducing dependence on physical processes while improving the accessibility, efficiency and responsiveness of University services for students and graduates.

The expansion of digital postgraduate education reflects the administration’s broader focus on strengthening digital access across UNIZIK, with the College of Postgraduate Studies and MICTU playing key roles in the process.

With both physical study in Awka and online participation available to eligible students, UNIZIK is providing postgraduate students with greater flexibility in pursuing their academic programmes regardless of their geographical location.
