UNIZIK Strengthens Nigeria–Brazil Academic Collaboration at International Conference

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has reaffirmed its commitment to internationalisation and global academic excellence through its participation in the 4th LASUCAS International Conference held at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), Salvador, Brazil.

The conference, which took place from July 1 to 3, 2026, brought together scholars, policymakers, and academic leaders from Nigeria, Brazil, and other emerging economies to discuss ways of strengthening South–South cooperation through research, education, innovation, and cultural exchange.

Representing UNIZIK at the conference were the Coordinator of the Brazilian Language and Cultural Centre, Prof. Obianuju Emmanuela Agbasi, and Prof. Uchechukwu Collins Nwogwugwu of the Institute of Social Policy and Strategic Studies.

A major highlight of the event was a presentation by Prof. Agbasi on Nigeria–Brazil Economic Relations, where she examined the role of trade, education, technology, agriculture, and cultural diplomacy in promoting stronger bilateral ties and sustainable development between both countries.

Beyond academic discussions, the conference provided a platform for expanding international partnerships among participating institutions. Key areas of focus included collaborative research, staff and student exchange programmes, postgraduate partnerships, and stronger institutional networks.

One of the significant outcomes of the conference was the approval by the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU) to provide institutional support for the establishment and growth of the Brazilian Language and Cultural Centre at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

The development is expected to deepen linguistic, cultural, and academic cooperation between Nigeria and Brazil while creating new opportunities for research and knowledge exchange.

UNIZIK's participation at the conference represents another milestone in its internationalisation drive, showcasing the University's growing research capacity and commitment to building strategic global partnerships.

The University stated that the outcomes of the conference would strengthen teaching, research, innovation, student and staff mobility, and intercultural engagement while enhancing the activities of the Brazilian Language and Cultural Centre.

Through continued international collaborations, Nnamdi Azikiwe University remains focused on promoting academic excellence, innovation, and meaningful South–South cooperation in higher education.
