Anambra State Government Shuts Down School Permanently, Arrest Teacher For Beating Pupil To Coma

Landmark School in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area, has been permanently shut down by the Anambra State Government. Chuma-Udeh clarified that the closure of the school was not solely based on the ugly incident but also due to its illegal status. She expressed deep regret over the situation, labeling the school's management as criminals running an illegal operation in the state.

A 30-year-old teacher, Faith Nwonye, has been arrested for allegedly beating an 8-year-old pupil into a coma in Anambra State. Following this incident, the affected school, Landmark School in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area, has been permanently shut down by the Anambra State Government.

Commissioner for Education, Prof Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, made this announcement to reporters in her office on Monday. She revealed that the school's proprietor and the teacher were summoned to explain the circumstances leading to the brutalization of the primary two pupil prior to the arrest. "We received reports of this unfortunate incident from an illegal school in Mgbakwu, where a child was beaten into a coma over the weekend. On behalf of the State Government, we invited the proprietress of the illegal school as well as the teacher who purportedly beat the child," she stated.

Chuma-Udeh clarified that the closure of the school was not solely based on the ugly incident but also due to its illegal status. She expressed deep regret over the situation, labeling the school's management as criminals running an illegal operation in the state."We have forwarded the matter to the police for further investigations, awaiting directives from the Governor. Meanwhile, the school is closed indefinitely because it was not supposed to exist in the first place. Any parent enrolling his/her child in an illegal school does so at their own risk," she added.

Addressing private school proprietors, Chuma-Udeh emphasized that operating an unapproved school in Anambra State is a criminal offense. She condemned violence against children and assured that the teacher would face the consequences of her actions.

"As soon as the police conclude their investigations, the teacher will be held accountable. She will face legal actions for violating child rights. Anambra State vehemently opposes violence against children, women, or any individual. It goes against our administration's principles, and the Governor strongly condemns such acts," she concluded.
