ASUU Explains Tree Planting Initiative at AFUED
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo Branch, Dr. Olatubosun Ajisafe, has said the union's tree planting exercise in the institution is aimed at contributing to efforts at combating climate change.
Ajisafe stated this on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during the tree planting exercise undertaken by the union at its Secretariat in the university.
Speaking on the exercise code-named "Let Nature Thrive at AFUED, Protect Our Trees, Preserve Our Green Spaces," Ajisafe said a committee headed by the Vice-Chairman of the union, Dr. Victor Omojeje, initiated the programme in line with directives from the national body mandating all branches to carry out the exercise nationwide.
According to him, the initiative is not only meant to combat erosion but also to beautify the institution.
"Climate change is no longer a new threat to us, the effect is here. We talked about the change in temperature in recent times and also about floods in the environment," he said.

"One of the simplest and cheapest things to do is to plant trees, so that one will be able to control erosion and cool the temperature in our environment.
"We decided to embark on tree planting in our university in order to beautify it and manage its soil. That is why the union at the branch decided today to take this initiative by planting trees first in our Secretariat before we do it in other parts of the campus."
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Prof. Bayode Isaiah Popoola, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Ireti Folasade Alao, described the exercise as a commendable initiative.
"We need to plant trees around us in order to make our environment green and lively with fresh air and also to protect it from erosion," she said.
"Trees are also wind breakers. Strong winds are broken by heights of trees around us, and of course, trees are things that provide shade for us that we can even sit under and enjoy cool breeze and fresh air. Like it is said all over the world, that when you cut a tree, you need to plant like ten to replace it, and that is why the university is supporting this initiative."
The exercise was flagged off by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Alao, and followed by tree planting by Drs. Victor Omojeje and Olaniyan Rotimi Francis, and the planting of a coconut tree by Dr. (Mrs.) Mercy Fasehun.
The event was witnessed by members of the ASUU AFUED chapter and other eminent personalities from within the university.
