ASUU Summons All Branch Leaders to Abuja for Ongoing NEC Meeting – No Strike Declared Yet
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has convened its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting today, Sunday, 30 November 2025, at the Festus Iyayi Building, University of Abuja, summoning chairpersons and key leaders from university chapters nationwide.
The gathering — which began today and is expected to continue through Tuesday — aims to brief branch leaders on the status of negotiations with the Federal Government and to review the union’s long‑standing demands, including the implementation of the Nimi Briggs Committee report, payment of outstanding salaries and allowances, and release of university revitalisation funds.
Union officials have emphasized that no official decision on strike action has been reached so far; the NEC is still deliberating and no strike has been declared. A senior NEC member, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the meeting’s purpose is to “bring branch leaders up to speed on negotiations, funding discussions, and welfare concerns affecting public universities” and that a final decision on possible industrial action will be made during the proceedings .
The Federal Government had previously invited ASUU’s leadership to a separate meeting in Abuja earlier in the week in a last‑minute effort to avert a full‑blown strike, but that session concluded without public disclosure of details due to negotiation protocols. Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa has maintained that the government has met most of the union’s requirements and is committed to preventing further disruption in the university system . ³ ⁴
The outcome of the NEC meeting will be communicated once deliberations conclude; until then, universities remain operational with no immediate strike in effect.
