FUNAAB Commences Massive Sales of Newly Harvested Yam Tubers, Other Farm Produce

From the farm to the marketplace, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, has again demonstrated its agricultural capacity with the commencement of massive sales of freshly harvested yam tubers and other farm produce. A towering pyramid of yams heralded the sales, in a display that has become a routine feature of the University’s harvest season.

The Directorate of University Farms, DUFARMS, which oversees the planting and harvesting, on Wednesday, August 20, 2026, commenced the sales of fresh yam tubers and other farm produce at the DUFARMS AGROMAT.

The sales were officially flagged off as part of the Directorate’s efforts to translate the University’s agricultural research and innovations into practical, marketable products, while making quality farm produce available to the University Community and the public at highly discounted rates.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development, Prof. Olawale Dairo, expressed delight at the development. He described it as a significant outcome of the University’s research efforts.

Prof. Kehinde noted that the produce represented a major research achievement, particularly in view of the resources and expertise invested in the planting and harvesting processes. He commended DUFARMS for its efforts and appreciated the University Management for its continued support for research, innovation and the translation of research outcomes into practical solutions.

Earlier, the Acting Director, DUFARMS, Dr. Emmanuel Bankole, expressed appreciation to the University Management for its continued support. He stressed that the achievements recorded by the Directorate would not have been possible without such backing.

Dr. Bankole highlighted the successful application of the minisett technology in producing yam planting materials. He explained that the innovation had enabled the University to produce its own planting materials instead of procuring them externally.

According to him, the planting materials produced during the year had an estimated market value of about 4 million naira, representing significant savings for the University through internal production.

The Acting Director, a former Chairman of the Ogun State Branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, described the achievement as an important milestone for DUFARMS. He added that the Directorate was working towards further perfecting the technology and making its yam planting materials available to other institutions and organisations interested in yam conservation and production.

Other farm produce on display included eggs, frozen chicken, plantain, banana, vegetables and elubo isu.

Present at the flag-off ceremony were the Dean, College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development, COLAMRUD, Prof. Emmanuel Fakoya; the Senior Deputy Registrar, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Mr. Moses Ayanda, and several members of the University Community who came to purchase farm produce.
