Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, on Friday formally matriculated 784 newly admitted students for the 2025/2026 academic session, charging them to uphold discipline, excellence, and strong moral values throughout their academic journey.

The 17th Matriculation Ceremony, held at the Hon. Justice Cordelia Chukwuma Convocation Arena, Thinker’s Corner Campus 11, commenced with a Holy Mass officiated by the Vice-Chancellor, Christian Anieke. In his homily, he urged students to embrace positive change, maintain good conduct, and make the most of the university’s serene learning environment.

During his address, Prof. Anieke described Godfrey Okoye University as the best private university in the South-East and one of the top five private universities in Nigeria. He congratulated the new students for gaining admission into the prestigious Catholic Diocese of Enugu-owned institution, emphasizing that university education is not only about obtaining a degree but also about building character, leadership, and service to society.

Prof. Anieke stressed the university’s zero-tolerance policy on examination malpractice, cultism, indecent dressing, drug abuse, and other social vices, while highlighting the institution’s commitment to producing morally upright and globally competitive graduates. He explained that university education fosters problem-solving, analytical thinking, creativity, decision-making, communication, and research skills. Through the Directorates of Entrepreneurship and Competitions, students are groomed to become solution-oriented leaders capable of tackling real-world challenges.

He further described the university as a hub for networking and social intelligence, urging students to participate in co-curricular activities and avoid mediocrity. On financial management, he encouraged students to budget wisely, save consistently, and prioritize needs.

Goodwill messages were delivered by Gozie Ogbodo, Rector of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, and Ekene Osuji, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Education, who congratulated the new students and urged them to uphold the university’s integrity and reputation.

Speaking on behalf of the matriculating students, Miss Jessica Onyeka highlighted the perseverance, resilience, and determination that characterized their journey to admission.

Highlights of the ceremony included the administration of the matriculation oath, presentation of awards to winners of the second edition of the PenGold Calligraphic Competition, and cash awards of over ₦3 million to the year’s best students in Law, Medicine, and Nursing by alumnus Mr. Chidera Attamah.

The ceremony formally inducted the new students into the academic community of Godfrey Okoye University, setting them on a path of academic excellence, character formation, and leadership.
