FUNAAB, Chinese Investors Plan 7-Hectare Commercial Hatchery Project
The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), is advancing plans for a strategic partnership with Chinese investors to establish a modern commercial hatchery farm on seven hectares of land within the University campus.
The proposed project is promoted by Olagen Agritech Nigeria FZE and is designed to integrate breeder chicken production with egg hatching, with potential to strengthen Nigeria's poultry value chain, enhance food security, facilitate technology transfer and create employment opportunities for young people.
The initiative follows a working visit to FUNAAB on 22nd September 2026, during which discussions centred on land cooperation, project implementation and development of a mutually beneficial partnership.
At a follow-up meeting held on 20th October 2026, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Babatunde Kehinde, reaffirmed the University's readiness to facilitate the investment under mutually agreed contractual terms. He reiterated FUNAAB's commitment to establishing lawful partnerships with private-sector organisations to advance agricultural development, research and innovation.
According to the University, a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will provide the framework for the development and operation of the hatchery upon conclusion of negotiations.

Beyond commercial poultry production, the partnership is expected to strengthen international academic engagement and provide exposure to modern hatchery technologies, improved production systems and global best practices.
Upon implementation, the project is expected to contribute to improved domestic poultry production, food security, youth employment and sustainable economic growth, while deepening agricultural cooperation between Nigeria and China.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2 on Zero Hunger, SDG 4 on Quality Education, SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
