FUTA Celebrates Former Acting VC Prof. Fasakin at Retirement
The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) honoured Professor Emmanuel Adedayo Fasakin, a Professor of Fish Nutrition and Utilization and former Acting Vice-Chancellor, at a colourful retirement ceremony held by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology (FAT).

The event celebrated his 70 years of life and decades of meritorious service to the university.
Professor Fasakin, who also served as Dean of Student Affairs, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), and Pioneer Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Ile Oluji, was lauded as a dogged academic, straightforward administrator, visionary institution builder, mentor, and peace-loving leader. Colleagues, students, alumni, and former members of the Governing Council attended the ceremony to pay tribute to his impactful contributions.
In her remarks, FUTA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, described Professor Fasakin as a friend, brother, father, mentor, and special adviser, highlighting his resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to the growth of the institution. She noted that his firm yet fair decision-making distinguished him as a dependable leader whose counsel remains invaluable.

Also speaking, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Timothy Amos, praised Professor Fasakin’s dedication, integrity, and selfless service. Former Governing Council members also lauded his leadership, describing it as marked by stability, innovation, and purposeful direction.
The Head of Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology, Professor Olamide Olawusi-Peters, noted that Professor Fasakin had been a father-figure and role model, whose administrative experience and mentorship significantly strengthened the department and inspired younger academics.
A major highlight of the celebration was a short playlet performed by FAT 501 students, focusing on safe fishing waters and healthy fish production, reflecting Professor Fasakin’s lifelong dedication to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development.
Goodwill messages from colleagues, former students, and mentees reinforced his reputation as jovial, humble, hardworking, frank, and peace-loving. Many also recalled his innovative Students’ Union Executive Diaspora Retreat, designed to expose student leaders to global best practices.
Responding to the tributes, Professor Fasakin, who now serves as Chairman of the Governing Council, Ekiti State Polytechnic, expressed surprise and gratitude for the elaborate celebration. He acknowledged the university’s role in shaping his leadership philosophy, preparing him for numerous responsibilities, and praised the collaborative spirit of colleagues and students that marked his tenure.

The ceremony provided a fitting tribute to a distinguished scholar, mentor, and administrator, leaving a lasting legacy of service, visionary leadership, and mentorship within FUTA and beyond.
