The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, LASU, Distinguished Professor Ibilola Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has congratulated David Akinwunmi, a recent graduate of the University’s Faculty of Law, on securing admission with scholarship and tuition support to pursue graduate studies at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Akinwunmi received the offer just months after completing his Bachelor of Laws degree at LASU. He has been awarded the Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarship and the Law Foundation Scholarship, valued at approximately CAD $45,000 over two years, and has already commenced his programme of study in Canada.

“On behalf of the entire LASU community, I congratulate David on this well-deserved recognition. His journey from our Faculty of Law to a fully funded graduate programme abroad is a testament to the quality of legal education our University provides, and to the discipline and diligence of our students. We are proud to count him among our graduates, and we wholeheartedly wish him a fruitful and impactful period of study.”

At the University of Victoria, Akinwunmi’s research will offer a comparative analysis of Nigeria’s and Canada’s tax laws and tax administration, with a particular focus on how Canada has incorporated indigenous tax principles into its fiscal system. He intends to examine what lessons Nigeria might draw as it continues its ongoing tax reform process, with a specific interest in how administrative approaches that feel familiar and culturally acceptable to citizens could improve voluntary tax compliance.
