Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has commenced a strategic engagement with Times Higher Education (THE) aimed at improving the university’s global visibility, reputation, and international ranking.

The initiative was formally discussed on Monday, April 20, 2026, when the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, received the Regional Manager for Sub Saharan Africa of Times Higher Education, Mr. Victor Okeugo, at the university.

Prof. Akanwa stated that in today’s highly competitive global academic environment, the university cannot afford to remain unnoticed despite its strengths in research, innovation, and community impact. She reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to leveraging its academic output and institutional capacity to build a stronger global academic profile.

The engagement session was held with members of the university expanded management team, including Deans and Directors, at the Conference Room of the Centre for Root Crop Research and Development.

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Okeugo noted that Nigerian universities, including MOUAU, possess unique strengths that can position them competitively in global ranking systems. He encouraged stakeholders to actively promote the university’s achievements and strengths in order to improve visibility and trust.

He further advised that the university should be treated as a brand, urging staff and stakeholders to serve as ambassadors who consistently project its value and impact.

According to the university, the collaboration with Times Higher Education reflects a deliberate effort by the current administration to align with global best practices in research excellence, academic performance, and institutional branding.
