NECO 2026 SSCE Results Delayed as September Release Deadline Passes

NECO has missed its first-week September target for releasing the 2026 SSCE results, leaving candidates awaiting results as 2026/2027 admissions continue.

The last paper of the 2026 SSCE was written on July 23. As of September 15, 54 days have elapsed since the examination ended.

In July, NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, said the council was confident that the results would be released in the first week of September or even earlier, following the introduction of computer-based testing for part of the examination process. He said the new system was expected to shorten the marking and processing period.

That timeline has now passed without the results being publicly announced.

The delay has raised concerns among candidates, parents and schools, particularly as universities and other tertiary institutions have already commenced various stages of their 2026/2027 admission exercises.

At the Federal University Lokoja, for instance, the university’s approved admission schedule fixed September 13 as the closing date for its Post-UTME screening, with the Central Admissions Committee scheduled to consider the screening results on September 17. The university’s screening requirements also include the submission of candidates’ O’level results.

Similarly, the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin-Ekiti, scheduled September 15 as the deadline for its 2026/2027 Post-UTME screening registration.

The situation is particularly significant for candidates who sat the NECO examination but are yet to obtain their results and may need them to complete admission requirements or meet institutional deadlines.

While some institutions may allow candidates to proceed with pending O’level results, admission requirements vary from one institution to another, creating uncertainty for students whose results are still unavailable.

The current wait is not unprecedented for NECO, although the council has released results at different intervals in previous years.

In 2022, the council released the SSCE results 45 days after the final paper. The 2023 results were released 58 days after the examination, while the 2024 results came 55 days after the last written paper.

The 2025 SSCE results were released on September 17, 54 days after the final paper.

The 2026 examination has therefore reached the same 54-day mark at which last year’s results were released, although the council had indicated that the introduction of CBT could allow it to release the results earlier this year.

There have also been years when the turnaround was considerably shorter. In 2019, for example, NECO released the June/July SSCE results on August 27.

NECO’s recent performance has generally reflected an effort to keep result processing within about two months of the final examination, making the missed September target notable, particularly given the council’s own earlier assurance of an earlier release.

NECO has not, in the sources reviewed for this report, publicly provided a detailed explanation for why the first-week-of-September target was missed.

The council had previously linked its expectation of an earlier release to the adoption of computer-based testing. The 2026 examination was also presented by officials as a major step in NECO’s transition towards greater use of CBT. During an inspection in July, Wushishi reported that the examination had proceeded without major technical problems and expressed confidence in an early release of results.

With the projected date now past, candidates and other stakeholders will want clarification on the stage reached in marking, collation, verification and quality assurance.

The delay also comes at a time when tertiary institutions are moving deeper into their admission processes, increasing the importance of a clear and realistic timeline from the examination council.

For candidates, the immediate concern is not only when the results will be released but whether the delay could affect their ability to meet individual institutional requirements and deadlines.

NECO is therefore expected to provide an update on the status of the 2026 SSCE results and give candidates a definite timeline for their release.
