NUC Accreditation Team for BSc Dental Surgery Presents Exit Report to BUK Vice-Chancellor
The National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Team for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme submitted its exit report to the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Professor Haruna Musa, fsi, on Wednesday, 19th November 2025.
Presenting the report, the team leader, Professor Akhiwu Benjamin of the University of Jos, commended the university for its notable strides in strengthening dental education. He lauded the establishment of the Oral Pathology Library, the acquisition of new books, and the university’s effort in awarding the contract for the construction of Dental Clinics, which he described as a major step toward enhancing clinical training.
Professor Benjamin further noted the high level of motivation within the Faculty of Dentistry, highlighting the cordial and productive work atmosphere among staff. He added that the faculty’s commitment to producing dental doctors capable of competing globally reflects a significant milestone in the university’s academic development.
He, however, offered recommendations for future improvement, describing the accreditation exercise as a meticulous assessment guided by NUC standards.
Responding on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Development, Professor Amina Mustapha, reiterated the university’s commitment to continuous improvement. She emphasized that accreditation exercises serve as important peer-review mechanisms that enable institutions to identify gaps, refine processes, and strengthen academic quality.
She assured the NUC team of the university’s readiness to address all observations and recommendations presented in the report.
Other members of the accreditation panel included Professor Oke Gbemisola from the University of Ibadan, Associate Professor Yemitan Toluwase from Lagos State University, and NUC representative Mr. Daniel Sanusi.
The team was accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Professor Kelvin Omejie, the Head of the Department of Dentistry, Dr. Jamiu Abannikanda, the Deputy Provost, College of Health Sciences, Professor Bashir Kaka, alongside several departmental heads and staff members.
