Peter Obi Donates N20m to Save UNICAL Dental Students from Expulsion

Former Anambra Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated N20 million to the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) to support over 400 dental students facing potential expulsion due to accreditation challenges.

The faculty has been facing critical equipment shortages and infrastructural deficiencies due to over-admission of students beyond the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria's (MDCN) approved annual quota of 10. This has put hundreds of students at risk of not graduating or being inducted as dental surgeons.

The N20 million donation is expected to be used for the procurement of vital training equipment, including dental chairs and laboratory upgrades, in line with MDCN accreditation standards. University officials believe that this intervention will significantly accelerate efforts to resolve the faculty's accreditation issues.

"No student should be denied education due to institutional shortcomings. Education is a right, not a privilege. We must support our institutions and protect the future of our young professionals."

The donation is expected to secure the future of hundreds of students and help the university meet the accreditation standards set by the MDCN. This is not the first time Peter Obi has supported educational institutions, as he recently donated N15 million to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Dental Students Association.
