Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) marked a historic milestone on December 4, 2025, as the Faculty of Basic Medical and Health Sciences hosted its first Professional Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony for pioneer Physiotherapy graduates.

The event, held at the University Auditorium (East Campus), was conducted in collaboration with the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria (MRTB) and celebrated the university’s growing contribution to Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.

In his welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Emenike Irokanulo, lauded the graduates for their discipline and perseverance, noting that they are stepping into a profession poised to transform healthcare delivery. He emphasized the importance of embracing emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, to advance diagnostics, treatment, and patient care. Prof. Irokanulo also recognized the visionary leadership of the Founder and Chancellor, Engr. Dr. Johnson Adewumi, Co-Founder Dr. Mrs. Gloria Adewumi, and Vice-Chancellor Professor Francisca Oladipo for their unwavering support.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Oladipo described the ceremony as “an extraordinary milestone” for the university, highlighting TAU’s rapid rise since its establishment in 2021 as a leading STEM-i institution. She emphasized that the Department of Physiotherapy has become a flagship for rehabilitation education in Nigeria, supported by full NUC accreditation, MRTB programme approval, a newly approved Teaching Hospital at Omu-Aran, and robust postgraduate programmes. She urged graduates to uphold professionalism, clinical excellence, and empathy as they enter the workforce.

The Guest Lecturer, Dr. Taiwo Joseph Oyewumi, Past President of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, delivered a keynote lecture on “The Nigerian Healthcare Ecosystem: The Place of the Physiotherapist,” covering the structure of healthcare delivery, professional governance, workforce capacity, and emerging opportunities in technology, digital health, and policy reforms.

The ceremony’s highlight was the administration of the professional oath by MRTB Registrar/CEO, Professor Rufai Yusuf Ahmad, formally recognizing the graduates as certified Physiotherapists. Outstanding students were also presented with awards, while key contributors to the programme received special recognitions.

In his closing remarks, Founder and Chancellor Engr. Dr. Johnson Adewumi congratulated the graduates, urging them to pursue excellence, practice ethically, and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s rehabilitation landscape.

The ceremony brought together faculty members, physiotherapy elders, MRTB officials, parents, and students, celebrating a defining moment in Thomas Adewumi University’s commitment to producing globally competitive healthcare professionals.
