UI Appoints First Female Bursar in 78 Years as Mariam Zakariyah Assumes Office

The University of Ibadan (UI) has recorded a historic milestone with the assumption of office of Mrs Mariam Adetoun Zakariyah, FCA, as the institution’s first female Bursar in its 78-year history.

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, described the appointment as a reflection of the university’s enduring tradition, culture and commitment to excellence.

Professor Adebowale made the statement during the assumption of office ceremony of the new Bursar, Mrs Mariam Adetoun Zakariyah, FCA.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that the foundation of the University of Ibadan was laid on an enduring foundation of excellence.

He commended the outgoing Bursar, Mr Adewuyi Popoola, for maintaining the university’s financial stability throughout his tenure.

Professor Adebowale said the process that led to the appointment of the new Bursar was fair and conducted without gender or religious bias.

He reiterated that the University of Ibadan was established on a tradition of smooth transition, which he identified as one of the sources of the institution’s strength.

According to him, the reputation of the University of Ibadan extends beyond its immediate environment, with its activities rooted in a commitment to excellence, integrity and service.

The Vice-Chancellor described the appointment of Mrs Zakariyah as a significant milestone, noting that the enduring foundation of UI has sustained its reputation as the first and best university in Nigeria.

Professor Adebowale emphasised that the standing of the University of Ibadan is not determined merely by its physical structures, but also by the way it conducts its affairs and upholds sound values.

The new Bursar, Mrs Mariam Adetoun Zakariyah, FCA, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for ensuring that the appointment process was fair and seamless.

She reaffirmed her commitment to leading the Bursary in fulfilling its mandate and ensuring effective service delivery.

Mrs Zakariyah also promised to deploy her expertise to justify the confidence reposed in her, while soliciting the continued support of the university management.

The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Professor Ibrahim Olatunde Uthman, and the Chaplain of the Chapel of the Resurrection, The Venerable Dr. Victor Idowu Oladele, offered prayers for a smooth transition and a successful tenure for the new Bursar.
