UNIOSUN Produces 90 Pioneer Medical Doctors After MDCN Induction

Osun State University, UNIOSUN, is set to graduate its first 90 medical doctors at its 16th convocation ceremony on September 23, 2026.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Clement Adebooye, disclosed this while addressing journalists at the university’s main campus in Osogbo during the formal commencement of activities for the convocation ceremonies.

According to Adebooye, the pioneer graduates successfully completed the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme after meeting the statutory and professional accreditation requirements.

He said the 90 graduates were inducted into the medical profession by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) on August 12, 2026. They are scheduled to receive their degrees on Wednesday, September 23.

“The first set of students for our Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery programme (MBBS) successfully completed their course of study in the session having sailed through all the required statutory and professional accreditation requirements,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

“All of them, 90 in number, were inducted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria on 12th August, 2026, and shall be presented their degrees on Wednesday, 23rd September, 2026,” he added.

The graduation of the pioneer medical class is one of the highlights of the university’s 16th convocation, during which a total of 4,357 undergraduate and postgraduate students are expected to receive degrees and diplomas.

Adebooye said the graduating cohort comprises 103 doctoral degree recipients, 400 master’s degree graduates, 3,845 first-degree graduands and nine postgraduate diploma recipients.

Providing a breakdown of first-degree results, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that 88 graduands earned First-Class Honours, while 1,509 obtained Second-Class Upper Division. A further 1,946 graduated with Second-Class Lower Division, 220 with Third-Class Honours and three with Pass Degrees.

Beyond the medical programme, Adebooye said the university was strengthening its academic offerings, research activities and industry partnerships in response to changing labour-market demands.

“We are strengthening our academic programmes and research, deepening industry and professional partnerships, improving our infrastructure and creating an enabling environment for seamless teaching and learning,” he said.

He added that the institution was placing greater emphasis on technology and innovation as it prepares graduates for developments associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the emerging knowledge economy.

“Our commitment is also reflected in our increasing emphasis on technology and innovation. The University is positioning itself to respond effectively to the changing demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the emerging knowledge economy,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor also acknowledged the support of the Osun State Government, saying the university would continue to address challenges confronting the institution.

He further disclosed that students admitted into 17 academic programmes during his first year as Vice-Chancellor would also graduate at the convocation. The programmes include Cyber Security, Information Systems, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Criminology and Security Studies, Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, International Relations and Diplomacy, and Psychology.

The graduation of the 90 pioneer medical doctors represents the first graduating cohort from UNIOSUN’s MBBS programme and adds a new group of medical professionals to Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.
