University of Port Harcourt Grieves Loss of Student in Off-Campus Shooting

The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has confirmed the tragic death of Mr. Godwin Francis Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science student, who was fatally shot during an off-campus incident involving security personnel. 

In a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, the institution extended its condolences to Akpakpan’s family, peers, and the entire student community. 

The university emphasized that the shooting occurred outside its premises. Details surrounding the incident remain uncertain. 

However, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has referred to the case as an “alleged murder” and linked it to a stop-and-search operation carried out by individuals in police uniform on April 16, 2024. 

According to NANS, Akpakpan was detained during the operation and was later killed during a reported altercation between police officers and individuals dressed in military attire. 

To date, no security agency has taken responsibility for the fatal shot. 

Comrade Jokiel Gideon Chinonso, Chairman of NANS Rivers State Joint Campus Council, condemned the act and demanded justice. “We want a transparent and immediate investigation. 

If there’s no action, we are ready to mobilize protests and shut down campuses across the state,” he said. NANS has vowed not to relent until those responsible are held accountable and student safety is prioritized. 

In response, UniPort reiterated its commitment to working with security agencies to uncover the truth. “We expect a thorough investigation and accountability in line with the law,” Dr. Kpenu stated. 

The university has urged its students and staff to remain calm and allow the authorities to conduct their inquiries, assuring the public of its dedication to protecting the welfare and dignity of the campus community.
