UNIZIK: Nnewi Campus Clinches Victory in NAUWA’s Maiden Novelty Football Match

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Women Association (NAUWA) held its maiden novelty football match on October 16, 2025, at the Bakassi Sports Complex, UNIZIK, Awka.

The exciting encounter between Agulu Campus and Nnewi Campus ended with Nnewi Campus claiming victory through a single goal scored from a well-placed free kick.

In her opening remarks, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, represented by Professor Tochukwu Gloria Orji-Okafor, applauded NAUWA for promoting physical fitness and sportsmanship among staff. She commended the association for sustaining the legacy of its past leaders and assured continued institutional support.

The Acting Director of Sports, Comrade Anthonia Chukwudi, in her goodwill message, also appreciated NAUWA’s efforts in prioritising sports development and lauded both teams for their spirited performance.

Delivering her speech, the President of NAUWA, Professor Nkechi Nwokoye, thanked God for the favourable weather and expressed joy at the success of the event. She announced that the competition will become an annual fixture, with Awka and Nnewi Campuses expected to face off again next year. She also encouraged non-member female staff to join the association.

Presenting the awards, the Acting Vice-Chancellor congratulated Nnewi Campus for their win and commended Agulu Campus for their active participation.

Medical personnel were on ground throughout the event, providing health checks for participants and attendees, including monitoring of blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and other minor health conditions.

The novelty match marked a milestone for NAUWA as it combined sports, health awareness, and camaraderie, reinforcing the association’s commitment to women’s wellness and unity within the university community.
