Viral "Ramadan Marriage" Notice at UDUS Confirmed as Satirical Hoax
Students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS), have been reacting to a viral notification circulating on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, claiming that male and female students are not allowed to stand together during the holy month of Ramadan.
The notice, which appears to come from the university’s Academic Branch, further stated that any couple found standing together would have their wedding Nikah arranged immediately. The content quickly gained attention, with many students reposting it on their WhatsApp statuses, group chats and student pages.
However, findings show that the notification was edited and did not originate from UDUS. Reports indicate that the original version of the document was associated with Bahria University, before it was altered to reflect UDUS details. Further findings also show that the so-called “original” notification did not originate from the institution it was first linked to. The university has reportedly denied issuing such a directive, describing the document as fake.
“I just saw it on a friend’s status and reposted it because it looked funny," Abdulmujeeb, a 200'level student from the department of social studies said.
Another graduate of the university, Issa, while reaching out to Interwatch to confirm the authenticity of the circular, noted that although it appeared funny, people outside the university may misunderstand it and assume it was an official directive.
The circulation of edited official documents has raised concerns about misinformation within the campus community. Student observers say such actions, even when intended as jokes, can affect the image and credibility of the institution.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official communication from the university confirming the viral notice.
Students are encouraged to verify information from trusted and official university sources before sharing, especially when it concerns sensitive matters.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible social media use among students.
