Yobe State University Appoints Prof. Mohammed Bashir Tahir as Substantive Vice-Chancellor

The Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has officially appointed Professor Mohammed Bashir Tahir as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University (YSU), Damaturu.

The appointment was formalized following an extraordinary meeting of the University’s Governing Council on January 15, 2026. The Council’s recommendation served as the basis for the Governor's approval, marking a new leadership chapter for the state-owned institution.

Professor Tahir is a distinguished academic and medical professional, holding the rank of Professor of General Surgery. He is a recognized Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons. Before his elevation to the office of Vice-Chancellor, he served as the Medical Director of the Ultra-Modern Police Hospital in Damaturu, where he gained significant administrative and clinical experience.

The announcement, released by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Alhaji Ahmed Mustapha Goniri, Esq., signals a transition to a permanent leadership structure aimed at strengthening the university's academic and research output for the 2026/2027 session.

Professor Tahir is expected to leverage his extensive background in the medical sciences and public health administration to advance YSU’s strategic goals and its standing among Nigerian tertiary institutions.
