Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano Launches Summer Skill Acquisition Training
In a bid to make Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano one of the leading institutions in Northern Nigeria, Vice Chancellor Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa officially launched a Summer Skill Acquisition Training program on Monday, August 12, 2024.
The event took place at the Centre for Entrepreneurs Development, located in the Faculty of Science building on the university's new campus.
The training, which is organized by the Centre for Entrepreneurs Development (CED) with the efforts of the National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS), YUMSUK branch, aims to equip students with practical skills for self-reliance.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. Latifat Muhibudeen, the Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurs Development, highlighted the uniqueness of the initiative. She noted that the majority of the resource persons for the training are students from various faculties within the university. Dr. Muhibudeen emphasized that the program is designed to impart essential skills that will enable participants to become self-sufficient, especially during the first semester break of 2024. She attributed the success of the event to the commitment of the Vice Chancellor.
In his welcome address, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa expressed his delight at the initiative, which he described as a crucial step in equipping students with practical skills alongside their academic degrees. He acknowledged the presence of key university officials, including DVC Academics Dr. Tijjani Rufa'i Buhari, DVC Administration Professor Abubakar Salisu Garba, University Registrar Adm. Isyaku Adamu, Dean of the Faculty of Science Dr. Farouk Sa'ad, and Deputy Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurs Development Dr. Tasiu Tijjani Sabiu.
Professor Kurawa stressed the importance of skill acquisition in the current educational landscape, stating that having a degree alone is no longer sufficient for survival in today’s competitive job market. He urged the participants to take full advantage of the opportunity and to be dedicated in their pursuit of these valuable skills. The Vice Chancellor also commended the Directorate for organizing the event and assured them of the management’s full support for similar initiatives in the future.
Following the official opening, Professor Kurawa and his entourage toured the various training stations to observe the skills being taught, which range from tailoring and catering to computer maintenance. He reiterated the significance of skill acquisition in Nigerian institutions of learning and affirmed his strong support for programs that empower students beyond their academic pursuits.
The Summer Skill Acquisition Training at Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano is set to be a transformative experience for the participants, equipping them with the tools needed for self-reliance and future success.
