DIG Kene Onwuemelie Recalls Trekking 3km to Lectures, Applauds UNIZIK’s Transformation

For Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Kene Onwuemelie, a return to Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, was more than a homecoming. It was an opportunity to reconnect with an institution that played a significant role in his journey and witness the transformation it has undergone over the years.

DIG Onwuemelie, a graduate of the Department of Psychology, made the revelation while speaking at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association (NAUAA) Converge 2.0, organised under the theme, “Uniting UNIZIK Alumni for Impact, Legacy, and Global Excellence.”

Recalling his days as a student, the senior police officer disclosed that he often trekked about three kilometres to his lecture hall, describing the university environment at the time as significantly different from what he encountered during his recent visit.

According to him, returning to the University years after his graduation and seeing the level of physical development across the institution left him amazed.

DIG Onwuemelie expressed his appreciation for the infrastructural transformation witnessed across the University and commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, for what he described as visible progress in the development of the institution.

The DIG noted that the transformation extended beyond the construction of new buildings and improvement of facilities, describing it as evidence of the continued evolution of an institution that had played an important role in his personal and professional journey.

His recollection of trekking several kilometres to lectures, compared with the modern infrastructure now taking shape across the University, became one of the memorable moments of the alumni gathering.

The occasion also provided an opportunity for distinguished alumni to reconnect with their alma mater, reflect on its development over the years and renew their commitment to contributing to its growth.

The NAUAA Converge 2.0 therefore served not only as a reunion of former students but also as a platform for alumni to explore new ways of strengthening UNIZIK’s legacy, impact and global relevance.

For DIG Kene Onwuemelie, the experience was particularly personal. He returned to the University where he once trekked three kilometres to attend lectures and encountered an institution undergoing a transformation that left him visibly impressed.
