Federal University of Environment and Technology Set to Commence in September 2025

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Governing Council and Principal Officers of the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Koroma/Saakpenwa, Rivers State, marking a significant step towards addressing environmental challenges in Nigeria. The university is expected to commence academic activities in September 2025.

The university is a strategic response to urgent environmental challenges, focusing on research in environmental sciences, renewable energy, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and sustainable technology.

Professor Don Mon Baridam has been appointed as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, while Professor Chinedu Mmom serves as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor.

The Governing Council comprises members from different regions of the country, including Mr. Emmanuel Onoja, Mr. Hamid Adekunle, Professor Chima Oji, and Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji Lamda.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to funding, research, and reforms to build a world-class institution.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized the importance of visionary leadership, merit-based appointments, and autonomy in ensuring the university's success. He urged the council members to prioritize excellence, faculty development, partnerships, and community engagement .

With its establishment, the university is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing environmental education, research, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
