FG Clarifies ASUU Agreement Status, Says No New Deal Signed Since 2009

The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified that the last signed and binding agreement between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) remains the 2009 agreement.

In a press release issued on August 28, 2025, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, explained that while a draft agreement—the Nimi Briggs Report—was produced in 2021 following renegotiations, it was never officially signed by the Federal Government.

The Minister’s recent statement that “no new agreement” was signed with ASUU refers specifically to this 2021 draft, not the 2009 agreement.
