FUEZ DVC Inspects Skills Acquisition Training, Urges Final-Year Students to Embrace Self-Reliance

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services, of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, FUEZ, Prof. Kabir Haruna Danja, has inspected the various training sections of the University’s Compulsory Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Programme for final-year students.

The inspection marked the conclusion of the five-week practical training programme organised by the Directorate of Skills Development and Linkages, DSD&L.

Addressing the students, Prof. Danja charged them to put the skills acquired during the programme into practice and use them to create opportunities for themselves.  

He noted that white-collar jobs were no longer readily available to all graduates, stressing the need for students to develop practical skills that could enable them to become self-reliant.  

"The students must hold tightly to the practical skills acquired and strive to become employers of labour rather than job seekers," he said.

During the inspection, the DVC, who was accompanied by the Director of DSD&L and Head of the Entrepreneurship Department, Prof. Amina Sani, and other staff of the Directorate, visited the various training sections where students demonstrated the skills they had acquired.

He, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and Management of the University, appreciated the Directorate, facilitators and all contributors to the success of the initiative, while reaffirming that the University would produce graduates who are both learned and skilled.

Students demonstrated practical skills in garment production and tailoring, make-up artistry and beauty care, shoe and bag making, solar power installation, small chops and catering, computer and phone repairs, as well as cybersecurity, among other areas.

Prof. Sani explained that the programme was introduced by the University Management under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yahaya Isa Bunkure, to make skills acquisition a mandatory component of the training of final-year students.  

She said the initiative was aimed at ensuring that students graduate with practical skills in addition to their academic qualifications.

Prof. Sani also urged final-year students who were yet to complete their documentation with the Directorate to do so without delay, noting that clearance from the Directorate is a requirement for graduation.

Prof. Danja congratulated the students on the successful completion of the five-week programme and encouraged them to make effective use of the skills acquired.
