FUL VC Mourns NPC Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, Describes Death as Loss to Nigeria’s Demographic Future

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, FNAL, FESAN, FLAN, has expressed profound sadness and extended his condolences to the Director-General, management and entire staff of the National Population Commission (NPC) following the death of the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, Talban Wushishi.

Professor Ibileye described the death of Dr. Yusuf, who passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 66, as a painful and irreplaceable loss to the National Population Commission, the Nigerian public service and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed particular concern over the timing of the death, noting that Dr. Yusuf passed away barely eight months after assuming leadership of the Commission, at a period when his experience, administrative competence and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s demographic data systems were considered critical to national development.

He recalled that Dr. Yusuf came into the leadership of the NPC with an impressive record of public service, governance and community engagement. According to him, the late Chairman quickly demonstrated a commitment to repositioning the Commission as a credible and professionally driven institution capable of providing reliable population and demographic data for effective national planning.

Professor Ibileye said Dr. Yusuf’s contributions to the advancement of civil registration, demographic data management and national development would remain an important part of his legacy.

“The death of Dr. Aminu Yusuf is a profound tragedy. At a time when Nigeria requires strong, experienced and committed leadership in the management of population data and demographic information, his sudden departure has created a painful void that will be difficult to fill.

“He was a distinguished public servant whose brief tenure at the National Population Commission demonstrated his passion for institutional transformation, national development and service to humanity. His death is not only a loss to the NPC and his immediate constituency, but also to the entire nation whose development aspirations depended, in no small measure, on the important mandate of the Commission.”

The Vice-Chancellor also commiserated with the Director-General of the NPC, Dr. Abuh Mohammed, the Federal Commissioners, management and staff of the Commission, as well as the deceased’s family, friends, associates and members of his community.

He urged the leadership and staff of the Commission to remain united and committed to advancing the mandate of the NPC, while preserving the values of professionalism, integrity and service to the nation that characterised Dr. Yusuf’s public career.

Professor Ibileye prayed for the repose of the soul of the late NPC Chairman and for God to grant his family, colleagues and associates the strength to bear the loss.
