FULAFIA Lecturer, Professor Abdullahi Dan'Asabe Advocates for Mandatory Local Refining of Crude Oil in Nigeria

Professor Abdullahi Dan'Asabe-Jibrin, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), has called for mandatory local refining of crude oil in Nigeria to address the country's reliance on foreign refineries for domestic consumption.

Speaking at the 3rd Seminar of the faculty on August 21, 2024, Professor Dan'Asabe-Jibrin emphasized the need for Nigeria, as one of Africa's largest oil-producing countries, to refine its crude oil locally. He highlighted the enormous potential of the Niger Delta Basin, which produces over two-thirds of the country's crude oil.

The professor suggested that the government should fix and optimize the four existing refineries, while also encouraging private investors to build modular refineries to meet the energy needs of Nigerians. He further called for the government to fight corruption in the oil sector and reintroduce fuel subsidies to alleviate the hardship faced by citizens.

In his remarks, Professor Shehu Abdul-Rahman, Vice Chancellor of FULafia, emphasized the importance of research in addressing societal problems. He encouraged researchers to provide practical solutions to contemporary challenges and promised that the institution would reward outstanding academic performances.
